About Concentrates

Concentrates are high-nutrient feeds, rich in energy or protein or both, and they provide more nutrients than an equivalent weight of forage. They are low in fiber, and their dry matter content is usually high, making them effective for boosting the nutrient density of a diet. In dairy production, concentrate mixes are commonly used to supplement a forage-based basal diet.

Concentrate intake is crucial during the nursing phase of young heifers. Starter grain provides essential growth nutrients and stimulates the development of the rumen and ruminal papillae, which are important for digestion in mature animals.

Feeding Recommendations

The amount of concentrate to feed varies based on several factors, including the quality of forage available, the cow’s milk production level, and sometimes the cow’s weight. As a general guideline, 1 kg of concentrate should be provided for every 2–3 liters of milk produced.
